Saturday & Sunday Oct 12 &13, Padron to Santiago de Compostela

Image
Hotel “Casa Douro” The last route to Santiago was more or less the same route Coline and I did in May from the French route. In the distance you see the Cathedrale of Santiago, however the path we had to follow through this forest was unfortunately not directly aiming towards Santiago, so we added some additional kms. Other Pilgrims were smart and took the road directly towards Santiago. We finally entered Santiago, and we checked in at “Casa Douro” where Coline and I stayed in May as well. We then went to the Cathedral where the office is close by and got our Credentials. Luckily it was not too busy in the office and within half an hour we had our Certificate. Then we went looking for a well-deserved nice place to have lunch celebrating our completed journey. We walked around and bought some souvenirs and planned our next day to go to Finisterre as I had seen you could book organized trips to Finisterre at the plaza. However, we didn’t see any opportunity to book this trip. So the fol...

Friday Oct 11, Caldas del Reis to Padrón

“Apartamento Bralo” Two more days to go. I looooove Padrones. These are the mini green, fried peppers with salt that are delicious and every time I saw them on the menu, I took advantage of ordering as you don’t see those too often on the menu . So now we are walking in Padrón and I was already looking forward to seeing them grow in this area and having them for dinner. Well probably it was not the season for harvesting, but they told me that indeed they are originally and grown there. Entering the city, we were once indicated to take a left turn around the city, but I took a straight line, through the city to avoid some additional miles, maybe not a too smart decision as there was no room for pedestrians. Anyway, I arrived close to our next stay at the same time Maria joined me, as she had followed the arrows indicating the Camino. We were booked at apartment Bralo, in a private apartment building. As the main entrance was locked, our backpacks had to be delivered to a different loc...

Thursday Oct 10, Pontevedra to Caldas del Reis

Image
Hotel “Virgen del Camino Pontevedra” After our "day off" in Pontevedra due to Hurricane Kirk, where we enjoyed walking, visiting the city, the market, and the old town, we left the following morning for Caldas de Reis, a walk of 21 kms . The weather was oke with some rain, and we noticed that we were getting closer to Santiago. Our next stop was Calda de Reis where we were booked into Hotel Sena, a very nice hotel at the end of the village. For lunch they served paella and that was the best treat ever!! It was delicious!! Caldas de Reis, whose name literally translates as “Hot waters of the Kings” was in the outskirt of the town, but leaving the following morning, it was not too far to join the Camino again. When the rain stopped, we went out for a walk. It was a very nice old city with nice little bridges over the river Umia however unfortunately we missed the ancient Spa and healing waters. This is where the grain goes in to dry. There are holes underneath where the air flo...

Wednesday Oct 9, Redondela to Pontevedra

Hotel “Virgen del Camino” The cab driver dropped us and our bags off, and we went in search of something to eat for breakfast. We didn’t notice the bad weather here, so we took off and spent all day walking in Pontevedra. It has an important group of squares of medieval origin and monumental religious buildings, such as the baroque Church of the Pilgrim Virgin and the Pazo de Lourizan. For lunch we went for a fish meal but wasn’t too great but 3 ladies from Seville next to our table made it very enjoyable.
